The research will firstly analyse the language features of samples of secondary childrens writing in order to describe qualitative differences according to ability, gender or age. The analysis will focus upon how the writing text is organised in terms of its overall structure and its structure at paragraph level; it will also analyse sentence and clause structure. In the second phase of the research, a sub-sample of writers from the original sample will be identified and these writers will be observed in the classroom as they undertake writing tasks. The observation will attempt to capture the composing processes as they are manifest by the writer. After the observations, the writers will be interviewed to elicit their own explicit understanding of their own composing processes and the language features they are using in their writing. The interviews will use the piece of writing produced in the observed lesson as a basis for promoting the research discussion
