It fosters partnership between practitioners and researchers in undertaking research and ensuring that it has an impact. Its core objectives are to: enhance learning across a range of ages and stages in education, training and lifelong learning develop the capability for transforming the knowledge base relevant to learning into effective and efficient teaching and training practices enhance the UK capacity for research-based practice in teaching and learning promote and extend multidisciplinary and multi-sector research in teaching and learning. There are four research networks under Phase I of the programme, nine research projects under Phase II and twelve research projects under Phase III. The programme is also supporting a Research Capacity Building Network, five research training fellowships and two career development associates Additionally, there are four cross-sectoral Extension Projects in Scotland, with more expected to be funded from 2005 as a result of competitions in Wales and Northern Ireland.
