Title
Using Multimodal Analysis in Investigating Digital Texts: The Case of Food Blogs,
Description
The paper presents the multimodal analysis part of a collaborative project between two research groups focussed on methodologies for Social Sciences (the ESRC-NCRM Node called MODE and the node called NOVELLA). The project aims to use both multimodal and narrative frameworks for analyzing blogs: on the one hand to examine the role of food and the construction of parenting in online multimodal narratives; and, on the other, to examine blogs as semiotic entities. The paper will discuss the methodological issues involved in the multimodal analysis of (food) blogs, as an instantiation of highly diversified multimodally-constituted digital texts. It will, first, discuss the notion of genre in a social semiotic perspective (drawing on Kress 2010) and the related issues involved in using the label ‘genre’ with blogs in general, and food blogs in particular.
